Operating Systems
First of all, we installed Windows 2000 RC2. The install worked fine, although we discovered it only installed the single processor HAL. The reason for this we discovered later was that if this system runs a one CPU operating system, then soft boots, the bios will only set up for one processor. Don't know why, as a muli-processor soft boot and a hard boot both work fine. To solve this, I changed to a mult-processor HAL in device manager. The reason for the first attempt to be Windows was the InfoManager. This is a tool supplied by ALR that shows things like fan speed, processor temp, and power supply voltages. With this we could determine how healthy the system really was.
Next came FreeBSD, the OS of choice. This is operating system that has been running for the last few weeks. All processors were detected fine, as well as the Adaptec SCSI controller. Four SETI@home sessions, apache, and various other activities gave the machine a bit of a stress test, with no problems.
